Co więcej, wpisanie po angielsku "Persian Gulf", skutkuje zaskakującym wyświetleniem głupiego pytania "Did you mean: Persian Gulf" Smile

Fighting words: Google, Iran spar over Gulf’s name

Internet company decides to remove the waterway's label from its maps, angering Tehran.

There is a new Gulf war underway, but be careful what you call it.

Google unwittingly sparked the conflict last week when it dropped the name “Persian Gulf” from the body of water separating Iran from the Arabian Peninsula. It declined to call it the “Arabian Gulf” or simply “the Gulf,” either, perhaps making its 250,000 square kilometers 97,000 square miles) the biggest landmark on Google Maps to go nameless.

Iran, the modern state of Persia, lost no time in launching an attack on Google. “Google[‘s] fabricating lies... will not have any outcome but for its users to lose trust in the data the company provides,” Bahman Dorri, Iran’s deputy minister of culture and Islamic guidance, told the Fars News Agency on Saturday.

Google’s nameless decision is the latest in a controversy over the Gulf’s name that goes back to the 1960s and has ensnared everyone from the Asian Games, to the US Navy to National Geographic magazine.  On one side is Iran, which has adopted the Gulf’s Persian name as a symbol of national grandeur; on the other are the Arab Gulf countries, who fear Iran is staking a territorial claim.

“The name of the Gulf has become a highly emotive controversy in the region, to an extent that can be difficult to understand,” Jane Kinninmont, senior research fellow at the Middle East and North Africa Program at London’s Chatham House, told The Media Line.

In hot water: Iran slams Google for keeping Persian Gulf off the map

Iran has criticized Google for leaving the body of water separating it from the Arabian Peninsula nameless on its online map service, saying it could hurt the Internet giant's credibility.

"Google fabricating lies will not have any outcome but for its users to lose trust in the data the company provides," Iran’s deputy minister of culture, Bahman Dorri, told the country’s IRNA news agency.

"The efforts of the (global) arrogance and its Arab allies to remove the name of the Persian Gulf will result in its name becoming more durable," he added.
While historical documents show that the waterway has always been referred to as the 'Persian Gulf', certain Arab states have recently mounted efforts to remove 'Persian' from the name of the waterway, instead choosing to call it the ‘Arabian Gulf’.

This goes against United Nations endorsements, which accept the ‘Persian Gulf’ as the only acceptable name for that body of water. The use of the name 'Arabian Gulf' was described to be 'faulty' by a UN Conference in 2002.

A Google representative has told the BBC the company did not name every place in the world – but was unable to provide an example of a similar case of a missing landmark.

Google Vows Full Service to Israeli Mossad

TEHRAN (FNA)- Chief executives of the search engine, Google, vowed in a recent meeting with Israeli prime minister to render full service to the Mossad spy agency.

"Investment in Israel was among the best decisions ever made by Google," Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said during the meeting with Netanyahu.

During the meeting, Netanyahu gave Schmidt a sketch which showed the Israeli flag hoisting above Google's emblem.

Western media reports had also earlier revealed that Google renders continued and special services to several spying agencies, including the CIA.

Google boss Eric Schmidt said in December that he was surprised to sea Iranian's talents in cyber war.

"Iranians are unusually talented (at cyber warfare) for some reason we don't fully understand," he told CNN.

Schmidt referred to Iran's infiltration of Danish cyberspace, using methods that are still not clear to Google.

Schmidt also raised the possibility that Iran hacked into the control system of the unmanned US drone it recently captured.

The US spy drone entered Iran through the Afghanistan border, and Iran captured it with minimal damage.
