Afghan officials say that Taliban militants have managed to take control of Barg-e-Matal town in the eastern province of Nuristan.

According to Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, the militants took control of the city on Saturday morning after heavy clashes with Afghan police forces based in the area, a Press TV Correspondent reported.

Mujahid added that 28 Afghan police members were killed in the attack that started on Friday night.

Hawa Alam Nuristani, an Afghan MP from Nuristan, said that telephone contact with Barg-e-Matal had been disconnected since early Saturday morning, which means that the Taliban have gained control of the town near the Pakistani border.

She criticized the US-led forces for failing to provide the Afghan police in the region with needed military assistance in order to protect the town.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the media, Nuristan's Police Chief Mohammad Qasim Payman confirmed the news, saying that his forces have withdrawn from the town.

Talibowie zajęli po kilkudniowych walkach Bargi Matal, stolicę afgańskiego okręgu o tej samej nazwie, graniczącego z Pakistanem - podały w niedzielę źródła oficjalne w Kabulu.

Według komunikatu afgańskiegp MSW, w walkach o miasto zginęło około 50 talibów.

Dżamaludin Badar, gubernator prowincji Nuristan, w której leży Bargi Matal, poinformował, że siły afgańskiej policji wycofały się z miasta po otrzymaniu rozkazu z Kabulu. Zmuszone były poniechać dalszej obrony wobec wielkich strat w ludziach i przewagi lepiej uzbrojonego nieprzyjaciela.

- Po kilku dniach walki siły rządowe nie mogły kontynuować obrony z powodu braków w uzbrojeniu i zaopatrzeniu - oświadczył gubernator.

Rzecznik talibów, Zabiullah Mudżahid, zakomunikował w niedzielę, że bojownicy antyrządowi w walkach na terenie okręgu Bargi Matal zabili dziesięciu policjantów i wzięli do niewoli piętnastu rannych przeciwników.

Zajęta przez talibów stolica okręgu ma duże znaczenie strategiczne we wschodnim Afganistanie. Stanowi bazę wypadową do sąsiadującego z nią Nuristanu i prowincji Kunar.

29 maja talibowie po ciężkich walkach przejęli już raz kontrolę nad miastem, ale zostali stamtąd po dwóch dniach wyparci przez wojsko afgańskie oraz siły lądowe i powietrzne ISAF.

Pentagon officials announced on Friday that the withdrawal from the outposts in the eastern Kunar province of Afghanistan-once called instrumental in the fight against the increasing militancy in the war-wracked country-- formally began on February 15 and is expected to take about two months, a Press TV correspondent reported on Saturday.

The officials, meanwhile, have stated that the commander of US-led forces in eastern Afghanistan, Major General John Campbell is "repositioning" forces "within the province to achieve greater effect and allow for more flexibility."

Campbell, "is moving forces around within his area of responsibility away from isolated static security outposts and more towards protecting the population in Kunar (province)," said Pentagon spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Elizabeth Robbins.

However, the move has prompted grave concerns among Afghan officials, who believe the shift of troops could create a military vacuum in the areas where militants are well established and may regain footing in the region, which once was vital to offensives against Taliban and al-Qaeda.

Afghan officials also fear they might not be prepared enough to protect the civilians against militant attacks, amid unremitting violence against both civilians and foreign troops in the country.

"It will be difficult for Afghans to hold these areas on their own. The terrain there is very tough," said Afghan Defense Minister Rahim Wardak.

A battalion of some 800 US troops have been deployed to the Pech Valley since 2006. More than 48 foreign troops have been killed in the war-torn country so far this year.

Last year saw a considerable spike in the number of attacks on US-led soldiers in Afghanistan with more than 710 troops killed.

A year after ordering 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan as part of a last-ditch "surge" strategy designed to defeat al-Qaeda and reverse the Taliban, US President Barack Obama conceded in December that gains were fragile and reversible.

On December 16, Obama unveiled the result of a two-month National Security Council assessment on the war in Afghanistan, claiming that Washington has been "on track" in achieving its objectives in the war-wracked country.

Obama, however, warned that US-led troops in Afghanistan continue to face an uphill battle in their mission.

Intense fighting continues in the troubled southern Afghan city of Kandahar between militants and security forces, a day after the Taliban unleashed a major assault on government buildings there.

According to local medics, the death toll from two days of fighting has climbed to 15 as nearly 55 others have been reported wounded, a Press TV correspondent reports.

The victims include security forces, militants and civilians.

Most of the fighting is taking place near the Afghan intelligence agency in the city.

Taliban militants are also occupying a traffic police building, firing shots and rockets from the site.

Shops have been closed and the streets have emptied following the clashes.

On Saturday, the Taliban attacked several locations in Kandahar, including the governor's compound, the mayor's office, three police stations and two high schools.

They militants claim their aim is to take control of the city.

Security has deteriorated after hundreds of Taliban prisoners escaped from a Kandahar prison last month.

Kandahar is known as the birthplace of the Taliban with the city and its surrounding areas frequently experiencing serious violence.

The violence comes a week after Taliban militants warned of a fresh wave of attacks against foreign troops, Afghan security forces and government officials.

The surge in violence comes despite the presence of nearly 150,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan.

Smoke is billowing from the direction of the German embassy and several other buildings, while sirens could be heard throughout the neighbourhood.

A Turkish military base on the outskirts of Kabul is reported to be under mortar attack. Turkish and Greek forces are responding with heavy-caliber machine gunfire.

Taliban claim armed suicide bombers also launched an attack on NATO headquarters.

Police say suicide bombers have attacked Jalalabad airport in eastern Afghanistan. Taliban declared attacks are also taking place in eastern Paktia and Logar provinces. They added that a police training facility in eastern Afghanistan has been attacked, too
