Dozens of al-Shabab fighter have reportedly been killed after the US military used remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicles to target their bases in southern Somalia.
The US drone attacks were carried out late on Wednesday in Dhoobley and Afmadow towns located near Kismayo, capital of the lower Juba region and a port city located some 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of the Somali capital of Mogadishu, said Somalia's Deputy Defense Minister Abdirashid Mohamed Hidig, quoted in a report by a Press TV correspondent.
The fresh US drone strike comes as the Americans carried out another drone attack in Somalia two weeks ago, The Washington Post reported.
The drone strike reportedly targeted two high-ranking members of al-Shabab militant group that allegedly had "direct ties" to what the US describes as 'anti-American cleric' Anwar Al Awlaki, a US-born citizen of Yemeni descent who is on the CIA's list of 'suspected terrorists' and reportedly hiding in Yemen.
In October 2009, al-Shabab fighters claimed they had shot down a US drone aircraft flying over Kismayo, a port town located some 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Drone attacks in Somalia make the lawless state the sixth country where the US military has used remote-controlled aircraft to conduct such lethal strikes.
The United States has now employed drones in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Iraq and Yemen to launch aerial bombings.
Somalia has been without a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
Strategically located in the Horn of Africa, Somalia remains one of the countries generating the highest number of refugees and internally displaced persons in the world.

At least 2,200 people have been killed and more than 1,100 others injured by the unauthorized US drone strikes in Pakistan since 2004, a report says.
A new study conducted by the London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism has also revealed that up to 168 children have lost their lives in more than 291 attacks since they began under George W. Bush, a Press TV correspondent reported on Friday.
The aerial raids have escalated since President Barack Obama took office in 2009. At least 236 attacks have taken place during his term, the report added.
Washington claims the attacks target al-Qaeda linked and pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan's northwestern tribal regions bordering Afghanistan. However, locals say the strikes kill civilians.
US Predators struck again today in Pakistan's Taliban-controlled tribal agency of South Waziristan, killing four "militants," according to reports from the region.
The unmanned, CIA-operated Predators or Reapers fired a pair of missiles at a compound in the village of Shin Warzak in the Wana area of South Waziristan. The compound is owned by Ahmed Noor, according to Geo News. AFP reported that the compound is owned by a local tribal leader.
"Two missiles were fired at the house of a tribal elder where local militants were present," a Pakistani security official told AFP.

Tak apropos najnowszych technologii w lotnictwie amerykańskim.
Parę dni temu odbyły się testy amerykańskiego bezzałogowego samolotu 20 razy szybszego od dźwięku, lecącego z prędkością 20 tysięcy km/h, wczoraj stracili nad nim kontrolę i leci sobie teraz nad atlantykiem.
Nie podaję linku, ponieważ jest w dość rzadkim języku, może dokopiecie się w anglojęzycznych stronach.
Wszystko fajnie tylko podaj chociaż nazwę tego samolotu, albo daj ten link jakoś sobie poradzimy.

10 killed as US drones target Yemen At least 10 people have been killed in unauthorized US drone strikes against areas in southern Yemen, according to a report.
The Arab broadcaster Al Arabiya reported on Thursday that unmanned US aircraft targeted “bases belonging to al-Qaeda” in al Mahfad and Shaqra areas in the southern province of Abyan.
The report came as violence intensified in the capital Sana'a between pro-regime military forces and defected troops following the failure of a diplomatic bid to end the deadliest violence since mass anti-regime protests swept the country.
At least 16 people were killed and dozens more wounded during Wednesday's clashes.
The US has been regularly launching air strikes against Abyan, killing scores of "al-Qaeda suspects" in an attempt to avert the downfall of the floundering Saleh regime.
Yemeni military claims its forces now control most of Abyan after months of failed attempts to retake the province.
Earlier this month, US drones also pounded the southern province and killed at least 30 people.

Amerykańskie samoloty szpiegowskie zaatakowane przez wirusa

Drony, czyli amerykańskie, bezzałogowe samoloty szpiegowskie zostały zainfekowane. Złośliwe oprogramowanie logowało każdą akcję wojskowych pilotów, którzy sterowali dronami podczas misji w Afganistanie.
Wirus nie do usunięcia
Co ciekawe, Amerykanie mieli problemy z usunięciem wirusa — pomimo wielu prób, okazywało się, że drony ciągle są zainfekowane. Postawiono więc na ostateczne rozwiązanie, czyli całkowicie wymazano pamięć dronów i reinstall systemu Predatorów i Reaperów.
Armia U.S.A. zastanawia się teraz czy infekcja to wynik przypadku, czy może celowego działania. Potwierdzono natomiast, że wirus opanował także maszyny biorące udział w tajnych misjach — nie wiadomo jednak, czy modułowi keyloggera udało się gdzieś przesłać przechwycone dane.
Przypomnijmy, że to nie pierwsze SNAFU związane z dronami. Dwa lata temu Irakijczycy podsłuchiwali je za pomocą rosyjskiego oprogramowania służącego do nielegalnego odbioru telewizji. Jak się okazało, drony nie szyfrowały sygnału przekazywanego do swojego operatora…

oprócz tych samolotów do bombardowania, teraz mają też dużo takich quadrokopterów do podglądania.
są malutkie, na prąd - bomb nie uniosą, ale potrafią zawisnąć nad celem. mogą też unieść mały ładunek.
komputer + kamera + gps + łączność z bazą = mnóstwo możliwości.
to dość tania technologia - można już kupić takie zabawki za kilkaset dolców.

ludzie zaopatrują swoje maszynki w kamerki i inne sprzęty. Nawet autopilot. Układy żyroskop+akcelerometr, sonar na poziomowanej platformie pozwalający utrzymywać stałą wysokość nad ziemią.

US Drone kills US Marine and Navy Medic
Reporting from Washington - A Marine and a Navy medic killed by a U.S. drone airstrike were targeted when Marine commanders in Afghanistan mistook them for Taliban fighters, even though analysts watching the Predator's video feed were uncertain whether the men were part of an enemy force.
Those are the findings of a Pentagon investigation of the first known case of friendly fire deaths involving an unmanned aircraft, the April 6 attack that killed Marine Staff Sgt. Jeremy Smith, 26, and Navy Hospitalman Benjamin D. Rast, 23.

US Army to fly 'kamikaze' drones
(AFP) - A miniature "kamikaze" drone designed to quietly hover in the sky before dive-bombing and slamming into a human target will soon be part of the US Army's arsenal, officials say.
Dubbed the "Switchblade," the robotic aircraft represents the latest attempt by the United States to refine how it takes out suspected militants.
Weighing less than two kilos, the drone is small enough to fit into a soldier's backpack and is launched from a tube, with wings quickly folding out as it soars into the air, according to manufacturer AeroVironment.
US drone raids kill over 120 in 2 days At least 127 people have been killed in separate US assassination drone strikes in Somalia and Pakistan's northwestern tribal region bordering Afghanistan over the past two days.
On Thursday, 41 people were killed and 33 others were injured when the US military launched a assassination drone attack on the outskirts of Hoomboy town, which is situated in Somalia's southern region of the Middle Juba.
The aerial attack followed a US assassination strike against Jamame town in Somalia's southern Jubbada Hoose region. At least 28 people were killed and dozens more were wounded.
Meanwhile, at least three people were killed in a non-UN-sanctioned US assassination drone attack on Pakistan's northwestern region of North Waziristan on Thursday.
The attack took place in Darpa Khel village, which is located about four kilometers (two miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in the district of North Waziristan.

Na korzyść wersji Irańczyków przemawiają jednak doniesienia, że RQ-170 został nie dosłownie zestrzelony, ale pokonany elektronicznie, poprzez zakłócenia sygnałów kontrolujących pojazd.
W listopadzie Rosjanie podali, że dostarczyli do Iranu zestaw relatywnie nowoczesnych radarów i systemów walki elektronicznej, należących do systemu przeciwlotniczego S-300, o nazwie 1L222 Avtobaza. Być może Irańczycy skutecznie zastosowali swój nowy nabytek i zastawili pułapkę na niespodziewających się niczego Amerykanów.
Wcześniej przedstawiciele władz USA, na których powołuje się agencja Associated Press, stwierdzili, że dron, który miał swoją bazę w Afganistanie, szpiegował w Iranie od lat.

Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Pakistan, Islamabad has warned that it will shoot down any American assassination drone intruding its airspace, a senior Pakistani official says.
"Any object entering into our airspace, including US drones, will be treated as hostile and be shot down," a senior Pakistani military official told NBC News.
The development came following the US-led NATO's strikes on two military border posts in the northwest of Pakistan on November 26, which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.
Islamabad has closed the border crossings in Pakistan that the Western military alliance uses to transfer fuel and other supplies for the US-led forces in Afghanistan.
Pakistan also called on the United States to vacate the Shamsi Air Base in Balochistan province. Pakistani forces took control of the base on Saturday after most of the US military personnel left.
On Friday, Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani warned the US and NATO that any future cross-border attack would be met with a "detrimental response".
"The democratic government [of Pakistan] would not allow a similar attack on the country's sovereignty and any attempt in future will definitely meet the detrimental response," Gilani said.

WASHINGTON – The Pentagon plans to expand its global network of drones and special-operations bases in a fundamental realignment meant to project U.S. power, even as it cuts back conventional forces.

DARPA is unveiling a portable laser weapons system, HELLADS, which seems like something out of a sci-fi movie. The new laser application, created by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems with a custom power system from Saft Batteries, will help change the way the American military fights future wars. Current military laser systems are bulky contraptions which are mainly the size of a passenger jet, while the proposed DARPA weapon can fit on the back of a flatbed truck. The 150-kilowatt, solid state laser weapon is strong enough to take down drones or other aerial targets; a prototype is expected to be available by the end of 2012.
HELLADS stands for High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System. Since laser beams work at the speed of light, it's effectively impossible for aerial targets to dodge them. The use of laser beams against land targets is complicated by line-of-sight issues, but the miniaturization of laser technology makes them perfect for use against aerial and naval targets. The demonstration laser for DARPA will be the first 150-kilowatt laser weapon of its kind. DARPA plans to use the completed prototypes against targets at White Sands Missile Range in early 2013--this will include ground testing against rockets, mortars, and surface-to-air missiles.
The big advance with these weapons is in the strength of the lasers and in their portability. Saft's Annie Sennet-Cassity told Fast Company that while previous military laser prototypes were stronger, they were also about the size of a passenger jet. This creates obvious difficulties in battlefield or aerial use. A 150-kilowatt laser beam is powerful enough to destroy aircraft. Previous military laser weapons primarily relied on blinding pilots with laser beams, rather than destroying the aircraft itself. For the United States Air Force, the ultimate goal is to equip bombers and UAVs with HELLADS weaponry.

Drone strikes in Yemen soar as U.S. stokes 'secret war'
America has dramatically stepped up its "secret war" in Yemen with the U.S. ordering dozens of drone attacks on al-Qaida hotspots, which have also killed scores of civilians.
With the backing of Yemen's fragile government, President Barack Obama has authorized a rapid increase in attacks since last May, with 26 incidents recorded.
The pace appears to be accelerating, with nine attacks so far this year and at least five this month, including a strike last week near the terrorist hotbed of Zinjibar. Up to 30 militants were killed in three separate missile strikes on the town, witnesses said.
Nationwide the figures are comparable to those in Pakistan, where America has struck on 10 occasions this year, despite a fierce public reaction.
Research by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism at London's City University has found that as many as 516 people have been killed in the Yemen attacks - mostly suspected members of al-Qaida's local ally al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). As many as 104 were civilians.
