The secret grave of General Emil August Fieldorf, one of Poland's national heroes, may have been found more than 50 years after he was executed by his own country's Stalinist regime.
Scientists and historians intend to examine a plot of land in a Warsaw cemetery to see if it contains a mass grave that might include the body of Gen Emil August Fieldorf, a Polish wartime commander hanged by the communist state in 1953.

The possibility that Fieldorf's body, and those of others murdered by the regime, is in the cemetery was raised after historians at the Institute of National Memorial, the body charged with investigating communist crimes, found a note written by a gravedigger in the late 1950s.

It indicated that Fieldorf's remains may have been dumped in the grave after his execution. "I cannot say for certain we have found the grave of General Fieldorf but we have identified a plot where 248 murdered Polish patriots are," said the Polish historian Jacek Pawlowicz. If researches do find the general's remains, he could be given a state funeral.

Fieldorf, who had German ancestors, was in the Polish army defeated by the Nazis in 1939. Initially interned, he escaped to France through Hungary and joined the newly formed Polish Armed Forces in the West.

Eventually he was parachuted back into German-occupied Poland, where, operating under the nom de guerre Nil, he led a number of daring raids against enemy forces.

Fieldorf was arrested by Soviet forces at the end of the war and sent to a labour camp. He returned to Poland in 1947 and lived under an assumed name, fearing communist reprisals against officers linked to the wartime government.

But in 1950 he accepted an offer of amnesty from the Stalinist regime. It was a ruse. Fieldorf was arrested, thrown into jail on trumped up charges and subjected to prolonged physical and psychological torture in a fruitless attempt to extract a "confession".

Fieldorf was unable to stand when, in 1952, a kangaroo court condemned him as a "Hitlerite-fascist" and sentenced him to death.

Historians believe that thousands of Poles who fought against the German occupation were murdered by a communist state determined to crush potential opposition.

Reporterzy "Polski" jako pierwsi byli w miejscu, gdzie już jesienią rozpocznie się ekshumacja. Jej celem jest odnalezienie kości generała i jego towarzyszy.
Miejsce to znajduje się na obrzeżach Cmentarza Powązkowskiego w Warszawie. Dziś są tam groby komunistycznych pułkowników Ludowego Wojska Polskiego. Poszukiwania mogiły "Nila" trwają już ponad 50 lat. Ale dokumenty, jakie odnalazł Jacek Pawłowicz, historyk z IPN, wskazują bez wątpliwości, że tym miejscem są właśnie Powązki. Jednym z nich jest raport, do którego dotarła "Polska".
