ZWIERZĘTA SĄ PORYWANE? AFERA NA UNIWERSYTECIE W PERU
Peruwiańscy studenci medycyny doskonalą swoje umiejętności na porwanych psach. Sprawa wyszła na jaw po prywatnym śledztwie, które przeprowadziła właścicielka skradzionego zwierzęcia. Psa odnalazła na operacyjnym stole uniwersyteckiego szpitala w Limie.

European REACH Legislation For Chemicals May Require More Animals And Funds Than Estimated
ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2009) — The European Union's REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical) legislation is intended as a comprehensive safety evaluation for commercial chemicals used in consumer products that are traded in Europe at amounts more than one ton per year. However, implementation of the regulation may require 54 million research animals and €9.5 billion ($13.4 billion) over the next 10 years, which represents 20 times the number of animals and six times the cost anticipated in previous estimates, according to an analysis led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Currently, the EU uses approximately 900,000 animals at a cost of €600 million ($847 million) per year to evaluate new chemicals, drugs, pesticides and food additives. A commentary on the research is published in the August 26 edition of Nature. The full analysis will appear the same day as an electronic prepublication of the September 2009 edition of the journal ALTEX, Alternatives to Animal Experimentation.
"As a toxicologist, I support the aims of REACH—it is the biggest investment into consumer safety ever," said study author, Thomas Hartung, MD, PhD, Doerenkamp-Zbinden Professor and Chair for Evidence-based Toxicology and director of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. "However, I am concerned that we have underestimated the scale of the challenge. Investment into developing alternative research methods to meet REACH goals is urgently needed."
According to Hartung and co-author Constanza Rovida, estimates for the number of chemicals to be covered by REACH range from 68,000 to 101,000, which is higher than the earlier estimate of 29,000 chemicals. The analysis was based on the conservative estimate of 68,000 registered chemicals. Results showed that 90 percent of the projected animal use and 70 percent of the projected cost would come from research into reproductive toxicity testing. This often requires that data be collected from two species of test animals and their offspring. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations do not include two-species provisions.
"A revision of test approaches especially for reproductive toxicity is essential. There is no alternative to REACH, but there will be no REACH without alternatives," said Hartung.
Further discussions of REACH and alternative testing methods will be addressed at the 7th World Congress on Alternatives & Animal Use in the Life Sciences held in Rome, Italy, August 30 to September 3. The meeting is co-chaired by Hartung.
Funding for the research was provided by the Transatlantic Think Tank for Toxicology.

There may not actually be solid evidence of an acid-spitting, lightning-throwing Mongolian deathworm living in the Gobi Desert but there will definitely be a documentary about it.
Journalist David Farrier and cameraman Christie Douglas have returned from Mongolia, where they spent about two weeks trying to verify the deathworm's existence.
Some Mongolians say the Allghoi Khorkhoi, or "intestine worm", resembles a 1.5m-long creature that jumps out of the sand and kills people by spitting concentrated acid or shooting lightning from its rectum over long distances.
Farrier would not say if the pair discovered evidence of the fantastical creature as they were not revealing too much until the documentary was complete.
People were welcome to assume they didn't find anything, he said, however: "As far as telling the story about the deathworm I'd say we were pretty successful in what we came back with and we have definitely got a doco on our hands."
They recorded about 30 hours of footage and spoke to people who said they had seen the worm.
"Because the sightings peaked during the 1950s a lot of these witnesses won't be around for much longer, so I felt pretty lucky to get to some of them before they are actually dead.
"The story of creature hasn't been told yet in any kind of factual way. It's always been crazy people out with flashlights on their heads looking for it, no one has got any facts down about it and that's what this is going to do."
Farrier is hoping to produce a 90 minute documentary by the middle of next year, which could be shown at film festivals.
He would try to get it shown in Mongolia because the locals there were keen to see the results of the trip.
In the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator no one had even heard of the deathworm. However, as they headed south towards the Gobi Desert more and more locals were aware of it.
Farrier said the whole expedition was a fantastic experience, despite experiencing increasingly unpleasant conditions in the Gobi Desert.
They didn't wash for two weeks, and at one stage it was so dry they blew their noses and blood would come out, Farrier said.
Farrier said he believed the deathworm did exist and another trip to Mongolia isn't out of the question.
"There are more leads that can be chased up as far as the deathworm goes, and there is also the Almas, which is their version of the Yeti, which comes down from Russia occasionally, and other creatures are calling from Mongolia."

Król zwierząt i symbol Afryki zagrożony. Populacja lwów w Kenii gwałtownie spada. Z tego powodu obrońcy zwierząt zorganizowali wystawę w Nairobi. Mają nadzieję, że pomoże zwiększyć świadomość ludzi i uchronić ten gatunek przed wyginięciem.
Według szacunków władz, w Kenii żyje obecnie tylko 2,1 tys. lwów. Zgodnie z obliczeniami fundacji "Born Free", populacja lwów w Afryce spadła o 75 procent w ostatnich 30 latach. Przewidują, że jeśli ta tendencja się utrzyma, lwy staną się gatunkiem zagrożonym wyginięciem.

British Columbia Bears Dying From Salmon Shortage, Globe Says

Sept. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Black bears and grizzly bears living in British Columbia’s central coast have been starving to death, triggered by a collapse in salmon runs, the Globe and Mail reported.
Without an adequate supply of salmon late in the year, bears don’t have enough fat to survive the winter, the newspaper reported.
Doug Neasloss, a bear-viewing guide in the western Canadian region, said he’s only seen six bears on the Mussel River this year, down from 27 last year, the Globe said.

Why Are Native Ladybugs Disappearing?

Researchers in New York are breeding colonies of ladybugs from those found by scientists in Oregon and Colorado during a year-long search.
Last year, entomologist John Losey from Cornell University first introduced the Lost Ladybug Project in an attempt to find out why the once-common native ladybug species had almost completely disappeared across the nation.
The project, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, rounds up citizen scientists, or individual volunteers who may have no scientific training, to search for ladybugs and relay photos of them to Losey and his team.
Researchers are particularly interested in the nine-spotted, two-spotted and transverse ladybugs. They are three native species whose populations have drastically dropped over the past ten years, likely due to the introduction of foreign species to control crop pests.
"Between 1999 and last year when we started the program, less than 10 individuals of the nine-spot were collected anywhere in the country," Losey said. "That used to be the most dominant species across the U.S. and Canada."
So far, there have been hundreds of citizen scientists participating in the project across the U.S and Canada that have produced thousands of photos since its launch.
However, the researchers got their breakthrough in June, when 6-year-old Alyson Yates and her mother, Kate, began sending in photos of nine-spotted ladybugs from their rural backyard in Lakeview, Oregon.
"It was really an amazing find," Losey said. "Usually, someone just finds one or two. Alyson and Kate sent in a couple one day, a few more three days later, a couple more a few days after that. It became apparent they had a population out there."
Losey then took a colleague to Oregon and came back hauling 13 nine-spotted and 30 transverse ladybugs.
"Aly [Alyson] was thrilled that people would come all the way from New York to go collecting in our yard," said her mother, Kate, who took on the project when her daughter saw an ad in the National Wildlife Federation's Ranger Rick magazine for children. "She just had a wonderful time looking for ladybugs, and we were ecstatic when we found some of the nine-spots they were looking for."
Then, Sheena Beaverson from Illinois sent in more than 200 ladybug photos while she was visiting Boulder, Colorado. That discovery resulted in an overnight shipment of 13 more nine-spotted ladybugs to the researchers.
Beaverson, who works for the Illinois State Geological Survey, likened the search for ladybugs to looking for seashells on the beach. "At first you look at every single one; later on you start looking for something rare or something special."
Since their arrival at Cornell, the tiny beetles have been occupied with reproducing within gossamer net cages lined up in Losey's lab, and feasting on green pea aphids being raised for them on fava bean plants in the university’s greenhouse.
Losey intends to conduct a number of studies with the captive populations in hopes of learning why their numbers dwindled in the wild.
"The leading theory is that the decline had something to do with ladybugs that were imported," Losey said. "That's mostly based on the timing of the decline, which coincides with the introduction of the seven-spot."
"It does do a lot of good in pest control," Losey said. "The question is whether it just replaced the existing ladybugs or added to the diversity."
The U.S. Department of Agriculture released the Asian multicolored ladybug in the 1970s and '80s in order to curb the number of insects on trees, but they did not become widely established until after the natives declined, Losey said. The round Asian beetle is best known for swarming homes by the thousands on warmer days in the fall.
"Some of the things we'll look at are, do the native species take longer to develop than the imported ones? Do they not eat as much? Are they more susceptible to parasitoids or pathogens? Did they interbreed and take on the appearance of the seven-spot?" Losey said.
If someone is going to manage pests based on natural predators, they must have a certain level of understanding in regards to the life cycle and feeding habits of the predators.
"The different ladybug species forage different parts of the plant, different parts of the field, at different times of day, and seek different prey," Losey said. "If you want the most effective suppression of pests, you need a whole variety of ladybugs because then they work together and cover different parts of the environment."
Ladybugs are responsible for ridding vegetation of its harmful pests, such as aphids, mealybugs, scale, and the eggs and young larvae of European corn borers and eastern tent caterpillars.
Eventually, field studies will be conducted with the ladybugs procreating in Losey's lab. But, he says the program’s objective is not to re-establish the natives in the wild.
“It could evolve into one, but for now, we're just trying to determine why they declined and what the implications are."

GWATELAMA. Prezydent Álvaro Colom ogłosił wczoraj (09.09.) stan wyjątkowy, aby zaradzić kryzysowi żywnościowemu. W Gwatemali ponad 54 tys. rodzin cierpi głód, od stycznia zmarło z tego powodu prawie 500 osób.
Problemem nie jest żywność, tylko dostęp do niej – Gwatemalczyków nie stać na jej kupno. Według prezydenta, głównym powodem klęski jest przedłużająca się susza, przez którą zbiory kukurydzy są mniejsze się o 36%, a czarnej fasoli o 58%. Fasola – jedna z podstaw lokalnej kuchni – stała się towarem luksusowym. Stan wyjątkowy sprawia, że łatwiej zdobyć pomoc międzynarodową, ale pozwala też przeznaczyć więcej środków z budżetu na walkę z głodem. Światowy Program Żywnościowy ONZ rozpoczął już dystrybucję 20 ton żywności w 164 społecznościach kraju.
Kryzys żywnościowy dotyka głównie mieszkańców tzw. suchego korytarza we wschodniej i północnowschodniej Gwatemali. Liczba biednych rodzin zagrożonych głodem może zwiększyć się do 300 tys. do końca roku. Mimo to, stan wyjątkowy ogłoszono w całym kraju. „Wszyscy odczujemy konsekwencje niedostatku żywności” – stwierdził prezydent. Colom zaznaczył, że klęska głodu byłaby jeszcze większa, gdyby nie program solidarności społecznej – oczko w głowie jego rządu - koordynowany przez pierwszą damę Sandrę Torres. Krytycy wskazują na nieprzejrzystość w zarządzaniu programem, ale prezydent odrzuca te oskarżenia: „rząd nie będzie tracił czasu na kwestie techniczne” – powiedział.
Gwatemala to jeden z najuboższych krajów Ameryki – ponad połowa mieszkańców żyje w biedzie. Według UNICEF, połowa dzieci do lat pięciu cierpi na chroniczne niedożywienie, a śmiertelność niemowląt wynosi 3,69% - gorzej jest tylko w Haiti. Z głodu zmarły w tym roku co najmniej 54 dzieci: statystyki mogą być zaniżone, bo często zamiast wygłodzenia jako powód śmierci podaje się biegunkę lub zapalenie płuc, które wynikają właśnie z niedostatku żywności.

N.C. Neuse River Piling Up With Millions Of Dead Fish

Observers kept an eye on the eastern portion of a North Carolina river after approximately 6 million fish turned up dead.
The Sun Journal of New Bern reported Sunday that waterway watchers were measuring the fish kill on the Neuse River. The estimate has grown to more than 5.5 million fish, mostly Atlantic menhaden.
The fish are now impossible to ignore near area rivers and creeks because of volume and smell.
Lower Neuse Riverkeeper Larry Baldwin said the magnitude of the fish kill is not normal. He said while the numbers were increasing, the pace of the kill was slowing.
Test results are expected this week. But experts say it appears low-oxygen saltwater along the river bottom mixed with the upper layers of fresh water and led to the kill.
More than 100 dead seabirds have been found on beaches stretching about 25 miles from Kalaloch to Rialto Beach since Friday. Hundreds more of the birds -- which appear to be primarily white-winged scoters and surf scoters -- appear to be ill, said Mary Sue Brancato, a resource protection officer with Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. When many birds show up dead on beaches, it is termed a "wreck," she said. Citizen scientists -- part of a group called the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team -- have been reporting back to Brancato regularly since the birds started showing up dead and ill on Friday, she said. "This is definitely what we would call a wreck," she said. "But I wouldn't say that it is abnormal either, at least not yet." Brancato said it hasn't yet been determined what caused the birds' deaths or illnesses. "Often when the birds are in a vulnerable state -- say if they are molting or migrating or malnourished -- and then there is an off-coast storm, we might see something like this," Brancato said. "They do appear to be molting and in the very beginning stages of migrating south from Alaska and the theory of the storm does hold up. "However, the thing that is a little different about this situation is that typically we would expect to see several different species, whereas this is just a couple of them that seem to be impacted." In addition to the large number of dead birds, the ones that are alive on the beach seem to be ill. "They seem to have some sort of food problem," Brancato said. They appear to be dazed and ill, and some of them seem to be seizing.
Just behind the Taj Mahal, thousands of dead fish have been floating down the Yamuna river here for the past three days. Residents have been gathering the dead fish and eating them, and there were reports Friday of some people falling ill because at least some of the fish may be carrying pollutants. As hundreds of curious onlookers gather at the banks to enjoy the rare spectacle of the Yamuna in spate after the recent rains, informal fish markets have come up at several points. "Nobody knows where they come from and why they are dead but the locals have never had such a good time," said Surendra Singh of Nagla Devjeet, a village on the riverbank on the outskirts of Agra. Government officials confirmed that there have been dead fish floating down the river, but declined to comment on reports that some people had fallen ill after eating them. Environmentalist Ravi Singh said: "These fish could have died of oxygen shortage. The muddy waters of the Yamuna, heavily polluted with industrial effluents, could have suffocated the fish. We have seen fish dying without water. In this case they are dying of a surfeit of muddy water." In the past few years there have been several occasions when thousands of fish have died of polluted water and lack of oxygen during the summer months. But fish dying in a flood is a new phenomenon, according to a resident of Yamuna Kinara Road, Nandan Shrotriya.
The giant Humboldt squid that invaded North Olympic Peninsula waters earlier this month apparently have taken to beaching themselves. Observers in Clallam Bay and Sekiu say that hundreds of the large squid — which can grow to six-feet-long and weigh up to 70 pounds — have littered the beaches each morning since Wednesday. “There had to be 100 of them laying all over the beach,” said Chris Mohr, owner of Van Riper’s Resort in Sekiu on Friday. “It was like a graveyard out there.” The large squid are alive when they wash up on the beaches, said Greg Bargmann, Fish and Wildlife marine ecosystem manager, on Friday. “They seem to move into shallow water, and are very still. They look dead, but they move if touched,” he said. “They are still alive, but they are not doing very well.” Bargmann had collected about 30 squid that beached themselves in Clallam Bay and Sekiu on Wednesday. He had reliable reports from Westport about lethargic squid swimming on the surface in daylight hours, “which is unusual,” as well as unconfirmed reports of squid littering beaches in LaPush and Neah Bay. Experts don’t know why the squid, which generally keep to deep water, are showing up en masse on the shores, any more than they know why thousands of the voracious, subtropical cephalopods suddenly arrived in northern waters earlier this month. The occurrence of Humboldt squid, which generally have a range from the southern tip of South America to Southern California, in the Strait is so unusual that researchers can’t explain either their appearance or their behavior.
“The cause [of the beaching] is unclear,” Bargmann said. “It may be related to water temperature or salinity — they aren’t used to diluted salt water — or it may be that the water temperature is cooling down.” Kent Baltz, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration oceanographer in Santa Cruz, Calif., suspects that the lower salinity of the water in the Strait could be hard on the squid. “Squid are highly sensitive to water conditions, very sensitive to pH” — a measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution — he said, pointing out that water in the Strait is generally more diluted by freshwater and has more sediment than that in open ocean. “I suspect that the water inside the Strait is having an effect on them,” Baltz said. “It’s probably causing them to die off quicker once they get inside the Strait. It could be one of the causes.” Despite their size, the natural life span of a Humboldt squid is short, researchers say. “They’re kind of like an insect. They only live a year” to a year and a half, Baltz said. “Once they reach their full maturity, they die pretty quickly.” Usually, squid die in the winter. California researchers expect die-offs of squid in February or March. But, the conditions in the Strait could be stressing them, he said. “We don’t know enough about them. We’re not used to their being inside the Strait, so it’s hard to know what part of their natural history they’re going through. “But I don’t think they are dying of old age. I think they have gotten themselves into water they’re not used to.”
Russ Vetter, director of NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, thinks the squid may be featuring into shallow water simply because they’re chasing food. “It’s like whales, nobody knows the total answer,” he said, adding that squid beach themselves at times in California, too. “It looks like they’re chasing fish in the surf zone and get caught,” Vetter said. Vetter feels that food is the reason the squid traveled north. “It is an invasion,” he said, “all the way up and down the West Coast,” one that has been seen in California since 2003, and which began being noticed in Washington state about one year later. “They’ll eat anything they can get their tentacles on,” including salmon, he said — their huge appetite is why they grow so big so quickly — but they particularly like sardines, hake, anchovies “any sort of little fish.” “Toward the end of summer and early fall, there’s a lot of food up there. So, one idea is that they’re following all this food,” Vetter said. “If the buffalo are going farther north, than the wolves are probably going farther north is the idea,” he explained. Another idea researchers are considering is that climate change, with warmer water temperatures, allows creatures that normally live in subtropical water to move north.
But Vetter said he isn’t convinced that squid are following warmer water. “They move up and down in the water quite a bit, like hundreds of feet, and they’re eating all the way. While we think of them as semi-tropical, they get exposed to really cold temperatures as they go into deeper waters” where the temperature is 30 to 40 degrees, he said. Another theory is that there are no longer enough squid predators, such as the popular commercial fish like tuna and swordfish, or sperm whales, Vetter said. If a lack of predators has been part of the reason that jumbo squid have invaded Washington state waters, then the solution may already have come calling. Mohr in Sekiu says residents are seeing more orcas than usual in the Strait. “In the last week, we’ve seen pods of killer whales on a regular basis,” he said. “They are in the area where they are catching squid.” Would orcas hunt squid? Vetter was asked. “Killer whales, I imagine, would love them,” he said.

Crews from numerous agencies spent most of the day cleaning up dead ducks from the American Falls Reservoir. Duck hunting season starts this Saturday and there are some things hunters need to be aware of before they head out. Crews from different agencies in eastern Idaho including the Idaho Department of Fish and Game were busy scouring the shore line of the American Falls Reservoir in search of dead ducks. Toby Boudreau, Regional Wildlife Manager, Idaho Fish and Game: "We've had a considerable amount of ducks die." The culprit-botulism, a paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin that's found in the algae of the shallow, warm waters at the north end of American Falls. The last time such an outbreak occurred was in the 90s. So far ducks and other shore birds have been hit the hardest, but small animals like coyotes and foxes have also been killed. So far, 2,200 dead birds have been recovered and as the recovery effort continues, they expect to find thousands more. Toby Boudreau, Regional Wildlife Manager, Idaho Fish and Game: "We're probably not going to be able to pick up all of the dead ducks today. We don't even know how big it is." With duck hunting season kicking off this Saturday, Fish and Game says they'll be fewer ducks for the hunters, they're also warning hunters to stay away from the affected areas, not to handle any dead ducks and to keep their hunting dogs away from dead ducks, because the botulism could easily spread to dogs. The dead ducks will quickly be buried to prevent the spread of botulism to other animals. Botulism isn't dangerous to humans as long as the meat is cooked properly. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources estimates 20-50,000 birds have died at the Great Salt Lake from botulism.
A viral disease causing a deer die-off in northern Livingston County could be even more widespread than originally thought. “My phone’s been ringing off the hook since the story got out,” said Livingston County resident Jino Dinelli, who first reported the possible outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD, in deer around his home on Ore Creek south of Hoisington Lake near Fenton. Several of Dinelli’s neighbors, including Bentley Sand and Gravel and the Coyote Preserve golf course in Tyrone Township, also confirmed finding unusually high numbers of dead deer in the past two weeks. Dinelli said he’s now hearing about dead deer found as far south as M-59 near Hartland and as far north as Linden and Argentine township in Genesee County. “I’ve had farmers tell me they’re hitting dead deer with their combines out harvesting their crops,” said Dinelli. “Lot of folks around here have stopped taking walks because you can’t walk very far without the smell of death hitting you.” Teams from the state Department of Natural Resources were at the site Thursday, seeking samples fresh enough to test for the EHD virus, which is transmitted via a small biting fly. The disease causes internal bleeding and often results in the infected animal’s death. It’s not known to infect humans. DNR wildlife biologist Tom Cooley said his preliminary examination of tissue samples indicate EHD is indeed what’s killing the deer. “We were able to look at one doe fawn that was first seen on Monday and was probably dead five days in the water,” said Cooley. “We didn’t see a lot of internal hemorrhaging but it’s possible because of the postmortem changes it wasn’t quite as obvious as we’d like to have seen.” What they did find was fluid pooling under the skin of the chest and forelegs, and a lot of blood-tinged fluid around the lungs, heart and abdomen. Those were the signs prevalent in an EHD die-off in Oakland and Macomb counties in 2008 that killed 150-200 white-tailed deer. “The edema is consistent with what we saw with EHD in last year’s cases, so there’s a very good likelihood that’s what it is,” said Cooley. Meanwhile, the DNR researchers took some organs back to the lab in Lansing to see if they could indeed isolate the virus for a conclusive diagnosis. “It’s not the freshest animal going but I’ve seen worse, so it’s possible we may be able to get something from that,” said Cooley. The disease typically occurs in late summer when the small gnats are most abundant, and disappears once colder weather sets in and kills off the bugs, usually well before hunting season sets in. “Even in areas where we’ve had EHD die-offs, we’ve never had hunters reporting it out in the field,” said Cooley. Still, Dinelli worries the late-season warmth will keep the gnats – and the EHD virus — active for some time yet. “The gnats are everywhere right now. If it continues this warm, we could keep having these dead deer popping up for weeks yet,” said Dinelli.
Twenty blocks of dead fish are piling up at the beach in Naples. The littered shoreline stretches all they way from Naples to the Lee County line. There was something a little different in the air when folks walked out on the pier to watch the sunset Friday evening. Thousands of these dead bait fish stretch for miles along this Naples beach. I think its sad and I want to know what happened," says Rhonda Falsetti, a visitor on the beach. Naples Natural Resources Manager Mike Bauer says this fish kill is the result of a natural algae bloom. When the algae died, it decomposed and took up all the oxygen, causing these little fish to die. "I think its because we haven't had a lot of rain until just recently and now we're getting those big fresh water flushes that are coming into the gulf and hitting the salt water and creating the bloom," says Mike Bauer. All the people that came out to the beach to watch the sunset were a little disappointed to see all the dead fish along the water, but not everyone was upset, the fish are having a field day. Beachgoers couldn't help but stop and take a closer look. and some even took souveniers. Despite all the dead fish, Bauer says the algae bloom isn't toxic and shouldn't affect swimmers. So the now the only question is what to do with all the fish.
Dozens of Humboldt squid that have washed up on Tofino, B.C., beaches, where an environmental group is warning people to stay away from the creatures during feeding frenzies. Josie Osborne of the Raincoast Education Society said she counted 27 squid in the area on Friday afternoon. Osborne said some were seen chasing prey near the shore of Chesterman Beach. "If I was a surfer and I saw a whole pack of squid that was feeding I'd definitely move out of the area," she said of the squid, some of which were a metre long. Squid are known to attack scuba divers during feeding frenzies in Mexico and California, Osborne said. "Perhaps they got caught in strong surface currents and waves," she said. "The birds and amphipods have already been feeding on them." According to the society, six squid washed ashore in Pachena Bay near Bamfield, B.C., and another six washed ashore at Tofino's MacKenzie Beach Thursday evening. "One fellow on the beach this morning related how last night he tried to get one back in the water, using a shovel," Osborne said. "He said the squid squirted ink at him and tried to wrap its arms around the shovel." The animal's suckers and arms are strong and their beaks are sharp. In August, dozens of squid washed ashore on local beaches. At the time, Osborne said the animals were probably immature juveniles and may have been hunting before the water carried them to land. Just days later, hundreds of pilchard washed ashore on the same beaches. Dozens of jumbo Humboldt squid have also recently washed ashore in Sekiu, Wash. They're named for their habitat in the warm Humboldt current along the South American coast.

Swedish people have discovered a grim new way of culling nuisance wild rabbits - by burning them in their thousands to heat their homes.
Animal rights activists have launched a furious attack against the practice, claiming that domestic pets are also being rounded up, shot and incinerated.
Anna Johannesson, from the Society for the Protection of Wild Rabbits, said: 'Those who support the culling of rabbits think it's good to use the bodies for a good cause.
'But it feels like the power company is trying to turn the animals into an industry rather than look at the main problem.'
The targeted rabbits are the unwanted inhabitants of capital Stockholm's parks, which are culled to protect the shrubs and trees which they gorge on.
Many of them are domestic pets released by uncaring owners which then go on to breed.
Six thousand were killed last year, frozen and their cadavers sent to a special heating plant in Karlskoga, central Sweden.
Animal rights activists are calling for alternative solutions to reducing the population.
Mrs Johannesson told newspaper Vårt Kungsholmen: 'We want to see them start looking at other solutions for the rabbits.
'Helsinki in Finland sprays the plants to make them unappetising and they have also set up a system of shelters for animals to be donated to.
'They have come much further along than us.'
