To news z USA.
Według raportu opracowanego przez Inter Press Service każdego dnia średnio trzydziestu weteranów wojennych próbuje odebrać sobie życie. Osiemnastu z nich się to udaje. Statystycznie samobójstwa częściej próbują kobiety, jednak mężczyznom częściej się ono udaje.
Cytat: | The suicide rate among war veterans is extraordinary, new data reveals.
Thirty try to commit suicide each day, on average, reports the Army Times. Eighteen succeed, roughly five of whom receive medical care from Veterans Affairs, rated one of the best health programs in the country.
"Of the more than 30,000 suicides in this country each year, fully 20 percent of them are acts by veterans,'' said VA Secretary Eric Shinseki at a VA-sponsored suicide prevention conference in January, Inter Press Service reported.
The Times noted that "In general, VA officials said, women attempt suicide more often, but men are more likely to succeed in the attempt."
The report cites access to health care and age -- younger veterans are less likely to try -- as two major factors in the suicide rate, and notes that the VA is seeking to strengthen its suicide prevention programs.

Cytat: | Suicide Rate Surged Among Veterans
By Eli Clifton
WASHINGTON, Jan 13, 2010 (IPS) - Suicides among United States military veterans ballooned by 26 percent from 2005 to 2007, according to new statistics released by the Veterans Affairs (VA) department.
"Of the more than 30,000 suicides in this country each year, fully 20 percent of them are acts by veterans,'' said VA Secretary Eric Shinseki at a VA-sponsored suicide prevention conference on Monday. "That means on average 18 veterans commit suicide each day. Five of those veterans are under our care at VA."
The spike in the suicide rate can most clearly be attributed to the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the high number of veterans returning to the U.S. with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
''We have now nearly two million vets of Iraq and Afghanistan and we still haven't seen the type of mobilisation of resources necessary to handle an epidemic of veteran suicides,'' Aaron Glantz, an editor at New America Media editor and author of "The War Comes Home", told IPS.
''With [President Barack] Obama surging in Afghanistan coupled with his unwillingness to withdraw speedily from Iraq, it means we have more veterans who have served more and more tours and as a result we have an escalating number of people coming home with PTSD, depression and other mental health issues,'' Glantz continued.
Health officials have pointed to the multiple tours of duty served by many U.S. soldiers deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq as one of the stresses placed on military personnel that differs from previous wars fought by the U.S.

Suicide rate among US soldiers doubles
Statistics have revealed that the suicide rate among non-active members of the US National Guard has almost doubled this year.
Nearly twice as many American soldiers, who are not on active duty, have committed suicide in 2010 as the number that took their own lives last year, while the suicide rate among active duty soldiers has not increased, USA TODAY reports.
This growth in suicide rates has been linked to drug abuse, brain injuries incurred during active service, depression, and the country's current bleak economic situation (home foreclosures, debt and unemployment), said Chris Philbrick, the deputy commander of an Army task force working to reduce suicides.
As of October, 86 non-active soldiers have taken their own lives this year, which is nearly double the entire 2009 number of suicides, which was 48.
There were 252 confirmed or suspected suicides among active and non-active Army members through October of this year. There were 242 such deaths in all of 2009, the report says.
These statistics could reinforce the fact that active-duty soldiers have greater access to programs and mental health resources, Philbrick says.

Tragiczny problem armii USA wciąż rośnie
Niemal dwukrotnie wzrosła w ub. roku liczba samobójstw wśród członków Gwardii Narodowej, w tym samym czasie nieznacznie spadła ilość podobnych przypadków wśród żołnierzy w służbie czynnej - poinformował w środę Pentagon.
W całym ubiegłym roku w armii USA doszło do 301 samobójstw.

A Veteran’s Death, the Nation’s Shame
For every soldier killed on the battlefield this year, about 25 veterans are dying by their own hands.
An American soldier dies every day and a half, on average, in Iraq or Afghanistan. Veterans kill themselves at a rate of one every 80 minutes. More than 6,500 veteran suicides are logged every year — more than the total number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq combined since those wars began.

One death-a-day: Military suicides reach terrifying rate
More US soldiers are losing their lives to suicide than from enemy forces, the Pentagon reports this week.
According to findings released on Thursday by the US Department of Defense, the suicide rate for active duty soldiers so far in 2012 is around one per day. In just the first 155 days of the year, 154 soldiers have committed suicide, a statistic only made more ghastly by comparing it to the number of American troops killed by insurgency this year — the website iCasualties.org reports that only 139 US soldiers died in battle this year.
"We are very concerned at this point that we are seeing a high number of suicides at a point in time where we were expecting to see a lower number of suicide," Jackie Garrick, head of the Pentagon´s newly established Defense Suicide Prevention Office, tells the Associated Press.
In analyzing the report, the AP notes that the suicide rate among active-duty soldiers has plateaued in the preceding two years, creating confusion for researchers caught off guard by the alarming numbers released this week. Even with the Iraq War officially over and the Obama administration promising an expedited end to its military operations in Afghanistan, troops are taking their own lives in shocking numbers. Dr. Stephen N. Xenakis, a retired Army brigadier general and a practicing psychiatrist, explains to the AP that the latest figures aren´t all that surprising to him, though.
"It's a sign in general of the stress the Army has been under over the 10 years of war," says Dr. Xenakis. "We've seen before that these signs show up even more dramatically when the fighting seems to go down and the Army is returning to garrison."

Army faces highest monthly total of suicides
The Army experienced a record 38 suicides in July, the highest monthly total since the service began releasing monthly figures in 2009.
According to an Army report, 26 active-duty soldiers and 12 Army National Guard or Army Reserve members were suspected of or confirmed to have died by suicide.
According to an Army report, 26 active-duty soldiers and 12 Army National Guard or Army Reserve members were suspected of or confirmed to have died by suicide.
The soldiers included a 21-year-old air traffic controller who shot himself in his Fort Wainright, Alaska, barracks; a 26-year-old captain who died at an indoor firing range in Virginia, and a 29-year-old sergeant who had deployed four times to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Three soldiers died at their own hands on deployment, and 13 had deployed at least once. But nine had never seen combat, according to the Army.
All were men, and three-fourths were in paygrades E-3 through E-5.
The deaths bring the total number of suspected suicides by soldiers to 187 for the year: 116 on active duty and 71 nonmobilized Guard or Reserve members. The previous record for a single month was 33 in July 2011.

W tym celu grant w wysokości 3 milionów dolarów otrzymali naukowcy z Indiana University School of Medicine.

Wiesz, z ekonomicznego punktu widzenia to oni dobrze kombinują.

More soldier suicides than combat deaths in 2012
The Department of the Army also showed strains, with soldier suicides outnumbering combat-related deaths for the year.
Through November this year, potentially 303 active-duty, Reserve and National Guard soldiers took their own lives. In Afghanistan 212 soldiers were killed as of Dec. 7. The trajectory for soldier suicides keeps getting worse.
With a month left in the year, the Army set a grim new record with 177 potential active-duty cases. Last year, there were 165 confirmed suicides, which was also a record. Among Army Reserve and Guard soldiers potentially 126 took their own lives, up from 118 in all of 2011.
The numbers have increased despite a range of training and awareness programs instituted by the service in the last few years.

25 disturbing facts about psych drugs, soldiers and suicides
[...]
1 33% of the U.S. Army is on prescription medications, and nearly a quarter of those are on psychotropic drugs.
2 In 2010, the Pentagon spent $280 million on psychiatric drugs. That number has since risen.
3 There are now over 8,000 suicides each year by U.S. soldiers and veterans; that's over 22 a day
4 33% of those suicides are attributed to medication side effects
5 That means medications are killing more U.S. soldiers and veterans than Al-Qaeda
6 500% more soldiers abuse prescription drugs than illegal street drugs
7 Under the Obama administration, the number of veterans waiting for VA care has risen from 11,000 in 2009 to 245,000 today
8 More active duty soldiers die from suicide than from combat: 349 dead last year
9 The number of prescriptions for Ritalin and Adderall written for active-duty soldiers has increased 1,000% in the last five years
10 For every active-duty service member who dies in battle, 25 veterans die by suicide
11 Only 1 percent of Americans have served in the Middle East, but veterans of combat there make up 20% of all suicides in the United States
12 The suicide rate of active-duty soldiers in the Civil War was only 9 - 15 per 100,000 soldiers. The suicide rate of active-duty U.S. soldiers in the Middle East is 23 per 100,000. And casualty rates were far higher in the Civil War, meaning the Civil War was more psychologically traumatic.
13 In the Korean War, the suicide rate among active-duty military soldiers was only 11 per 100,000
14 To date, the Pentagon has spent more than a billion dollars on psychiatric drugs, making it one of the largest customers of Big Pharma
15 In 2010, over 213,000 active-duty military personnel were taking medications considered "high risk" by the Pentagon
16 In the years since the Iraq War began, twice as many soldiers of the Texas Army National Guard have died of suicide than in combat
17 Defense Secretary Leon Panetta calls military suicides an "epidemic"
18 Of all the branches of the military, the Army has the highest number of suicides each year, almost 400% more than the Marines
19 Most active-duty soldiers who take psychiatric medications consume a combination of three to five prescriptions
20 The use of prescription medications by active-duty soldiers is largely unregulated. Soldiers are given a bottle of meds and sent into combat. If they run out of meds, they are given a refill, no questions asked.
21 The mainstream media says the answer to lowing suicides of veterans is to take away their guns so that they cannot shoot themselves. This is the logical equivalent to trying to fix your car's engine by removing the "check engine" light.
22 The Pentagon is initiating new research (in 2013) to try to figure out why psychiatric medications cause soldiers to commit suicide. The research involves tracking brain activity by attaching electrodes to the skull.
23 One-third of military suicides are committed by soldiers who have never seen combat
24 In the last year, the military wrote over 54,000 prescriptions for Seroquel to soldiers, and all those prescriptions were "off label," meaning the intended use has never been approved by the FDA as safe or effective.
25 Dr. Bart Billings, a retired Army Colonel and former military psychologist, refers to psychiatric drugs as a "chemical lobotomy" for soldiers.

Why suicide rate among veterans may be more than 22 a day
(CNN) -- Every day, 22 veterans take their own lives. That's a suicide every 65 minutes. As shocking as the number is, it may actually be higher.
The figure, released by the Department of Veterans Affairs in February, is based on the agency's own data and numbers reported by 21 states from 1999 through 2011. Those states represent about 40% of the U.S. population. The other states, including the two largest (California and Texas) and the fifth-largest (Illinois), did not make data available.
Who wasn't counted?
People like Levi Derby, who hanged himself in his grandfather's garage in Illinois on April 5, 2007. He was haunted, says his mother, Judy Caspar, by an Afghan child's death. He had handed the girl a bottle of water, and when she came forward to take it, she stepped on a land mine.
When Derby returned home, he locked himself in a motel room for days. Caspar saw a vacant stare in her son's eyes. A while later, Derby was called up for a tour of Iraq. He didn't want to kill again. He went AWOL and finally agreed to a dishonorable discharge.

On average, 22 veterans commit suicide each day, according to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA).
To commemorate them and raise awareness, 32 veterans from the group flew to Washington, D.C., to plant 1,892 flags on the National Mall today, one for each of the veterans that the group says took his or her own life in 2014. IAVA extrapolated that number from a 2012 Veterans Administration report finding that 22 veterans took their lives each day in 2009 and 2010, only a slight increase from years past, and a number that includes all veterans, not just those who served in America’s more recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Special Forces’ suicide rates hit record levels — casualties of ‘hard combat’
The suicide rates for U.S. military members who serve in special forces, like the Navy SEALs and the Army Rangers, have hit all-time highs, said Adm. William McRaven, the head of Special Operations Command.
The rate’s been high for two years, he said, Newsmax reported.
“And this year, I am afraid, we are on path to break that,” he went on at a conference in Tampa. “My soldiers have been fighting now for 12, 13 years in hard combat — hard combat — and anybody that has spent any time in this war has been changed by it. It’s that simple.”
He didn’t provide hard data for the suicide rate, but prior military statistics show that in 2012, more active duty service members died by their own hands — about 350 — than in combat, Newsmax reported. That trend seems to be showing the same for 2013, when 284 service members killed themselves between January and Dec. 15, 2013.

Over 30,000 US Veterans of Post-9/11 Wars Have Killed Themselves Since 2001
"As we come closer to the twentieth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we must reflect on the mental health cost of the Global War on Terror."
New research released Monday shows the post-9/11 wars launched by the U.S. military since 2001 have resulted in over 30,000 suicides by active duty American solders and veterans—over four times the number killed in combat operations.
According to Brown University's Costs of War Project—established in 2010 to account for the loss of lives and taxpayer dollars spent on U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—an estimated 30,177 veterans and service members have killed themselves over the last nearly two decades, compared with 7,057 members of the military who have been killed in combat.
The findings were compiled from interviews, government data, and secondary literature.
