Robert Vaughn (32 l.) z Georgii jest trzecią osobą, która zachorowała tam na martwicę tkanek wywołaną infekcją bakteryjną. Choroba zwana „necrotizing fasciitis” zdarza się rzadko i jest wyjątkowo groźna.
Bakterie powodujące tę upiorną chorobę należą do tej samej grupy, która wywołuje zwykle zapalenie gardła. Kiedy jednak dostaną się pod skórę zamieniają się w istne potwory, zabijające wszystkich nieleczonych pacjentów i nawet wielu z tych, którzy mają pomoc lekarską. Często dochodzi do amputacji. Lekarze musieli usunąć Robertowi część nogi, ale dzięki temu powstrzymali postęp choroby. Niedawno w Georgii amputowano obie nogi i palce u rąk u Aimee Copeland (24 l.), która doznała głębokiego skaleczenia łydki.

Case #1:

Aimee Copeland, 24, was riding a homemade zip line near the Little Tallapoosa River near Carollton, Georgia May 1st when the line snapped, causing a gash in her left calf. The bacteria thought to have triggered the infection, Aeromonas hydrophila, thrives in warm climates and fresh (brackish) water, like the river where Copeland was kayaking and zip lining with friends.

Lana Kuykendall, 36, was infected on May 7th after she gave birth to twins at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta (Emory University Hospital Midtown in Atlanta - 201 Dowman Drive. Atlanta, Georgia 30322)

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), commonly known as flesh-eating disease or flesh-eating bacteria syndrome, is a rare infection of the deeper layers of skin and subcutaneous tissues, easily spreading across the fascial plane within the subcutaneous tissue.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a quickly progressing and severe disease of sudden onset and is usually treated immediately with high doses of intravenous antibiotics. ( via foxnews.com )
